10 Stories of Single Mothers

10 Stories of Single Mothers gives voice to Australian Single Mothers

AUSTRALIA

1 January 2013

64,000 single parents with children over 8 years

were shifted from a modest parenting payment

to a lower allowance known as “Newstart”

The government said pushing kids onto Newstart would encourage them to work.

But, two-thirds of single mums were already in paid work.

Since being moved onto Newstart

many women have been forced to abandon or put on hold further study and education

– their only pathway out of poverty.

One quarter of Australian kids being brought up in a single parent family are living in poverty – a 15% increase in the last decade.

“My thought process every day is

WORRY WORRY WORRY…”

“We’re gonna look back at this time as a very shameful part of our history.

Particulary in single parent families. The kids are a lot more aware of things and they’re already growing up on the outside of society.”
